A description of the New Netherlands
Adriaen van der Donck (Author), Thomas F. O'Donnell (Editor, Writer of introduction), Jeremiah Johnson (Translator)
Adriaen Van der Donck came to the New World in 1641 as a resident officer in the employ of Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, and wrote the first carefully detailed study of the land that stretches north and northwest from Staten Island to Canada, the St. Lawrence, and Lake Ontario--the land which is now New York State. This book is the earliest literary example of how an exiled American looks back at the land he has left and sees more clearly both its beauty and its blemishes
