Col. William Smith was born in 1654/1655 in Newton Bromswold, England, the son of John and Mary Smith. He married Martha Tunstall (1652- 1709), daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Tunstall, and a native of of Putney, England, in 1675 at Tangier, Africa, while serving as British mayor of the city. They had thirteen children, 1676- 1693. The family returned to London, England, in 1683, and immigrated to New York in 1686. They settled on Little Neck, Brookhaven Township, Long Island, in 1689. He died there in 1704/5. Descendants listed lived in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California, and elsewhere
