Courtyards : aesthetic, social, and thermal delight
Reynolds (architecture, U. of Oregon) focuses on the Hispanic patio or courtyard, which is generally enclosed by and closely related to a building, rather than the North American patio, which typically faces a much larger walled garden or lawn. He discusses the semi-open space in terms of aesthetic pleasure, social centrality, and the technical modification of the climate. Not surprisingly, none of the examples are from his home town, Eugene, which is damp and dim all but a month or two a year. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
