German artillery of World War One
World War One was a turning point in warfare. The sieges and set-piece battles of the past were replaced by a static stand-off punctuated by attacks on the line as each side tried to break the stalemate. The war saw artillery used on a hitherto unprecedented scale, and in this highly illustrated new book Herbert Jager details the weapons used by the German army. Starting with the development of German artillery up to 1914, the book goes on to describe in detail the field artillery - light guns, and light and heavy howitzers - that were used, before covering heavy mortars and long-range guns. Specialist weapons for mountain, coastal, railway and fortress use are discussed, as are specialist engineer and infantry guns. Developments in other spheres of warfare during World War One had a bearing on artillery as well, and so antiaircraft and antitank guns are covered, as are guns fitted to both tanks and aircraft. The book also looks at aspects of artillery such as tactics, ranging, transportation and the provision of shelter for artillery pieces. Comprehensive and exhaustively researched, this highly illustrated history of Wold War One German artillery will be required reading for anyone interested in the first great age of heavy firepower
