Introduction to ethics : including a critical survey of moral systems. Vol. 1

"The lectures are the first which Jouffroy has published. Their design may be best explained by the following extract from the author's preface: "It seemed to me that, in the progressive development of my ideas upon the grand problem of human destiny, those upon ethics could most readily be separated from the rest; and I was influenced by this additional consideration, that it was my purpose before entering upon the science of ethics, to pass in review the various systems which had prevailed in relation to the fundamental principles of morality. This would give me an opportunity to explain my own system, and thus sum up the results of my previous researches. I shall subdivide my series of lectures into several parts, of which each will form a separate work. The First, under the title of an Introduction to Ethics, will be devoted to a consideration of the fundamental principles of moral science, and will include, beside my own views, a review and criticism of all the important solutions which have been given of these problems"--Preface.
