Seward thought acquisition of Aleutians would permit USA to dominate Pacific. Clinton tried to instal ballistic missile system there. WW2 brought bleak, barren islands to fore when Japanese took western islands. Campaign came to involve Britain, Canada and Soviet Union. 1943 battle for Attu Island was typical of harsh conditions, need for suitable training and equipment and peripheral nature of this war theatre
