Perspectives on Ernst von Dohnányi

"Although Ernst von Dohnanyi (1877-1960) was considered the greatest musician of his generation by many of his contemporaries, his considerable musical legacy was largely ignored in the latter half of the twentieth century. This situation was the result of both a trend that valued avant-garde compositional styles over those of nineteenth-century Romanticism and rumors that Dohnanyi had collaborated with the Nazis during World War II. Recent years, however, have brought revised assessments of Dohnanyi that addressed the misgivings and criticisms expressed by earlier scholars."
