Though he did not invent the sleeping car, George Mortimer Pullman is credited with elevating sleeping-car service to unsurpassed quality, comfort, and efficiency. In the twentieth century, George Pullman's legacy, the Pullman Palace Car Company, gobbled up competitors until it was the only North American company devoted to operating and staffing sleeping cars (the company was also noted for its dining and lounge cars).
