Les catholiques français sous l'occupation

Ch. 10 (pp. 241-269) deals with Catholic reactions to Vichy's anti-Jewish policy. The racial laws were enforced by Xavier Vallat, a veteran nationalist and Catholic antisemite, and were praised by the Action Française journal and some Catholic publications as "moral purification". Clerical circles in Lyon, led by Cardinal Gerlier, protested against cruelty during the deportations and the racial criteria of the legislation but not against the legislation itself. The bishops and some religious journals expressed solidarity with Jews, and some priests hid them or helped them escape to Switzerland or Spain. With the occupation of North Africa by the Allies and of southern France by the Germans, the Catholic Church took steps to distance itself from Vichy and its policies.
