Sir Henry Docwra, 1564-1631 : Derry's second founder
"Henry Docwra served under Sir Richard Bingham in Connacht in the 1580s, and in the 90s he was a colonel with the earl of Essex elsewhere in Ireland and in the Netherlands. In 1601 he was given 'the most desperate assignment' to plant garrisons at Derry and along the Foyle and at Beleek and Ballyshannon - to drive a wedge between O'Neill and O'Donnell, the leaders of the northern Gaelic confederacy." "Most of this book is an account of Docwra's Derry-based campaigns during the Nine Years War. It draws on contemporary documents and the skill of a military and political historian to provide an account of the war and its aftermath, including the 'second foundation' by Docwra of the City of Derry under James I's charter of 1604."
