Out & about

'Ari Marcopoulos: Out & About' should be considered a diary of one photographer's journey through two decades of New York life. Originally form the Netherlands, Marcopoulos came to New York City in 1979 where he printed photographs for Andy Warhol. He immediately became involved in the art and music scenes of that era. At the same time, Marcopoulos was actively shooting photographs on the streets, documenting the scenes of Times Square "B-Boys" and other denizens of the fringes of society. In the early 1990's he turned his attention to the growing scene of skateboarding youths that populated the streets of downtown New York, capturing these subjects with the same intimacy as those of the 1980's generation. 'Out and About' focuses not only on the underground artists and celebrities of these times, but intersperses them with documentation of street life, ephemera, and telling portraits of Marcopoulos, his wife and his children as they grew together over the years against the backdrop of the city. - from the dust jacket
