Abstract: A comprehensive textbook for undergraduate and graduate students integrates basic introductory material into the complete picture required by the exercise specialist. The 30 text chapters are organized among 7 principal sections grouped under 2 specific text parts. The first part (3 sections), covering exercise physiology, includes: an overview of nutrients and optimum nutrition as the basis for human performance; human energy intake, transfer, and expenditure; and body systems for delivering and utilizing energy. The second part (4 sections), covering applied and exercise physiology, includes: training for enhancing energy capacity and performance; work performance and environmental stress; the interassociations among body composition, energy balance, and weight control; and exercise for reducing cardiovascular disease risk during aging. Reference data and guidelines for energy expenditure, water density, basal metabolic rate, nutritionally dense foods, meal-exercise plans, etc., are provided in 7 appendices. Copious illustrations and references are provided throughout the text
