Arthur Adams collection, 1896-1955

The bulk of the collection represents Arthur Adams' life long research of his Adams ancestors that culminated in the 1955 publication, Jeremy Adams of Cambridge, Mass., and Hartford, Conn. and His Descendants. The collection consists primarily of source material used by Dr. Adams in his research as well as several compiled genealogies. This material consists of correspondence, deeds, probate, family bible records, county and town records, military records and newspaper clippings. These records are transcriptions and extracts taken from original documents. There is very little original source material in this collection. Most of the compiled genealogies relating to the Adams family were written by Dr. Adams. There are some compiled genealogies authored by others such as The Steelman and Adams Family written by Elizabeth B. Satterhwaite. Although Dr. Adams' immigrant ancestor, Jeremy Adams, settled in Cambridge, Mass. in 1632 and later Hartford, Conn., the collection focuses on the grandsons of Jeremy: John, Jeremiah and Jonathan and their descendants. These three brothers were part of a group of families that had come from Huntington, Long Island and settled in Great Egg Harbor, New Jersey. Therefore the bulk of the research material covers the Adams and other allied families of Southern New Jersey. There are over 100 allied families represented in ths collection. The primary families are Brush, Conover (Van Cowenhoven), English, Grant, Lake, Morrison, and Steelman. There is a separate collection of transcribed family bible records with some overlap with the allied family series
