Papers respresenting Stern's work as rabbi of Congregation Ohef Shalom in Norfolk, Va., director of rabbinic placement for Reform Judaism for the Central Conference of American Rabbis, counselor for student field work and adjunct professor of Jewish history at the New York campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and genealogist. Writings series consists of articles written by Stern relating to his interests as rabbi and genealogist. Correspondence series consists of general correspondence including updates from other researchers on their genealogical inquiries. Genealogy series includes requests consisting of correspondence between Stern and persons requesting genealogical information with his responses and the research he conducted to answer the requests; correspondence, meeting notices, publicity, and publications from historical and genealogical associations with which Stern was involved; and genealogical research on numerous families compiled by Stern throughout his lifetime and as preparation for his book, Americans of Jewish Descent, and the later editions titled First American Jewish Families: 600 Genealogies, 1654-1988, including research on families, marriages, wills, and cemeteries, and notes, documents, and miscellaneous materials collected by Stern pertaining to his own family history
