A more perfect union : race, rights, and rhetoric in the NAACP and the White Citizens' Council

In the 1950s and early 1960s the Citizens' Council and the NAACP competed with each other to bring about their own vision for America. Though both groups used Cold War rhetoric as a basis for thier arguments, each used the rhetoric in different ways. While both of these groups put forth their own viewpoints they also struggled againt each other for legitimacy amidst America's evolving reputation as a world leader during the early years of the Cold War. By using the Communist Party as the scapegoat, both groups were able to attract more moderate people to their cause
