Language policy and education in Sindh, 1947-2010 : a critical study

Among the many persistent problems of education in Sindh (Pakistan) the problem of language policy also has serious implications. Sindhi children are denied a meaningful education by the erasure of their language from school. Against a backdrop of sometimes violent Mohajir and military politics, Sindhi medium schools have been converted into the Urdu medium adding to previous, ongoing, and more gradual losses in Sindhi linguistic and cultural capital. This dissertation examines some of the geneses and modus operandi of Sindhi educational disenfranchisement, from an historical and political perspective. The extant politics of education and language policies in Sindh are also examined to uncover their impact on educational policies. Through stakeholder perspectives, the place of the Sindhi language in Pakistan's public school system is assessed. Language, culture, indigenous rights and the mother tongue as a medium of instruction impacting cognitive development is also considered
