Visions for Storytelling Studies: Why, How, and for Whom?

The following remarks originated as a plenary forum by the same title at the Storytelling, Self, Society Conference at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on March 5, 2004. We print the panelists' opening remarks, followed by a sampling of comments from the general discussion. The participants explore the relationship between storytelling and the academy, asking how storytelling practitioners and scholars can help to build the art and the criticism of storytelling in the 21st century. How can we build the necessary networks, the collaborations among storytelling artists, scholars, and critics that will foster understanding of the full range and intricate creative nuances of the art? How can we cultivate a critical language that is heartfelt and also discerning, that blends sensitivity to the artistic community with freedom to apply the best relevant scholarly took?
