Effects of spin-orbit coupling on single quantum states in metallic quantum dots

This dissertation explores transport in two different nanometer scale systems: metallic nanoparticles and organic molecules. I have used energy-level tunneling spectroscopy to probe the discrete "electrons-in-a-box" energy eigenstates in metallic quantum dots. Using this technique, I have determined how spin-orbit scattering effects the spin properties of single quantum states
