British secondary education : overview and appraisal
Richard E. Gross (Editor)
" This is a symposium of twenty-three chapters, describing the different kinds of secondary schools in Britain. The chapters are written by the headmasters or members of staff of the individual schools represented. The outstanding characteristics distinguishing each school and kind of schooling are emphasized. The editor visited these schools while serving as a Fulbright Professor of Education at the University College of Swansea. He has chosen the schools and edited the material to give a board yet detailed picture of the types and trends of British secondary education. He has written an introduction and a full final review wherein he assess, at this important juncture in the evolution of British secondary schools, their strengths and shortcomings as prime social institutions. The recommendations found in the book go beyond the aims and practices of secondary education and hold fundamental implications for other aspects of schooling, from the primary years to teacher education. Doctor Richard E. Gross is a Professor of Education at Standford University, California, U.S.A. Born in Chicago, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1942 and has taught in schools and universities, lecturing in social studies, history, secondary education, curriculum and teacher education. He has had five books published, including Educating Citizens for Democracy, published by Oxford University Press, New York; and many his articles have appeared in encyclopedias, learned journals, and important newspapers."
