The Trouble With Malaria.
Malaria is the world's primary infectious disease. Infecting about 300 million people per year, it is hard to believe that the disease was almost wiped out thirty years ago. In its wake are high infant mortality, destroyed communities, and crippled national economies. The Nature of Things looks at the way in which changes in the environment put people at greater risk of contracting many diseases. We are also shown how misuse of infection-fighting drugs helps the malaria organism to build its own resistance. Includes interviews with Dr. Kevin Kain, Tropical Disease Unit, The Toronto Hospital; Louis Miller, National Institute of Health, Bethesda; Bernhard Liese, Director, Health Services, World Bank, and others
