The Dar al-Funun: Educational reform and cultural development in Qajar Iran

Only recently have historians of modern Iran begun to focus on the role of secular education in intellectual and social transformation. During the nineteenth century, the period in which Iran was drawn into the sphere of Western global hegemony, a wide array of Western scientific and intellectual innovations made their way into the country. One of the significant channels through which these innovations were disseminated was education, whose institutions were undergoing radical secularization. Founded by Amir Kabir, Nasir al-Din Shah Qajar's first prime minister, the Dar al-Funun (1851- ca. 1892) was Iran's first secular institution of higher learning
