The theories of instinct : a study in the history of psychology
"The present work is an attempt to trace the principal theories of instinct in their historical connections. The earlier history of the instinct theories is inevitably a mere sketch, since, previous to the eighteenth century, only indications exist of the general type of explanation prevailing within a given system or period, explicit problems, such as the relation of instinct to intelligence, the genesis of instinct, and the like, which are so familiar in modern discussions, not having come to conscious recognition."
