Rescuing Da Vinci : Hitler and the Nazis stole Europe's great art, America and her allies recovered it

A lot of European and Russian art works are stolen, destroyed or missing since the looting of Hitler, Göring and other Nazi's during World War II. Hitlers dream was to build the world's greatest collection - the Führer museum - in his home town of Linz, Austria, by the systematic theft of Europe's great art. Museum officials took extraordinary measures to protect art from Hitler and the ensuing war. They assembled a special force of American and British museum directors, curators and art historians known as the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives section. This section attempted to minimize damage and track down stolen works. In the end, the Allied Forces located more than 1,000 repositories, in mines and castles, many of which contained art, sculpture, furniture and other stolen treasures. Many pieces are still missing. Efforts to locate and return them continue to this day
