"Coral reefs are integral to the economy of Tobago -- they are a magnet for tourism and recreation, provide food and livelihood to Tobago's residents through coastal fisheries, and shelter its shorelines from ravaging storms. Tobago's reefs are beautiful and highly diverse, and possess yet unknown bio-pharmaceutical values. The economic values that coral reefs support are often overlooked or underappreciated in coastal development, management and policy evaluations, resulting in decisions that do not maximize the long-term economic policy evaluations, resulting in decisions that do not maximize the long-term economic potential of coastal areas."
