Tophane, Istanbul: the Ottoman cannon foundry. Lithograph by J.F. Lewis, 1838, after Coke Smythe

A working view of Tophane with its workers. The Galata Tower and Sultan Ahmed Mosque are seen in the distance. Tophane was the site of the main armaments factory of the Ottoman empire. The buildings were burned down in the Firuz Agha fire of 1823 and later rebuilt. All that remained subsequently was the historical clock tower and Mecidiye mansion
