"Since the publication of the third edition in 1985 there has been considerable change on New Zealand's railways as they have been transformed into a profitable business culminating in July 1993 with their sale to a US-NZ Consortium lead by Wisconsin Central, itself only formed in 1987. This edition of the atlas has endeavoured to reflect the developments which have taken place over these eight years.
