"There are few, if any, organizations that have been as celebrated by African-Americans as the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense; the Vanguard group of the highly contentious and volatile mid-sixties Black Power Era. Considering this adoration and reverence that so many African-American activists still possess half-a-decade after the Panthers genesis, it would not be an error to consider the group iconic. The primary problem with this "adoration and reverence" is that the vast majority has little to do with who the Panthers were, what they stood for, and their goal structures.
