Current theories relating to resilience and young people : a literature review
The concept of resilience was a significant development in the study of mental health in the 1970s as it signified a change in focus from mental 'illness' to mental 'health'. This report provides an overview of six key theorists in the field of resilience: Michael Rutter, Norman Garmezy, Emmy Werner, Suniya Luthar, Ann Masten and Michael Ungar. It describes the work of these theorists, points of convergence and divergence in their definitions and conceptualisations of resilience, limitations and current debates, and the overall value of this construct for health promotion and research. This report is one of a series of literature reviews to help inform the VicHealth Mental Wellbeing Strategy 2015-2019
