Six-year old Olivia survives the 1921 Tulsa race massacre but is so traumatized she refuses to go back to school, even after the family moves to Kansas. In a dream she sees again how her mother stood up to the attackers that day, and Olivia's reflecting on the courage displayed by her mother and other resisters gives her courage also to resume her normal life
