An extreme radical and publisher, dedicated to the promotion of republicanism and infidelity, it was Richard Carlile (1790-1843), along with his friend, William Sherwin, who dared to republish the banned works of Tom Paine. After the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester in 1819, Carlile advocated tyrannicide. It was too much for the state to take. He was found guilty of blasphemy and imprisoned in Dorchester gaol between 1819-1825. Incredibly, he was able to continue his work and he spent his time running the business from his prison cell through the medium of a weekly journal, The Republican.
