From Heroines to Hyenas: Women Partisans during the Greek Civil War
The participation of women in armed combat was arguably the most striking feature of the Greek Civil War (1946-9). The advent of civil conflict marked a shift in the gendered division of military labour, as the female 'novelty' soldier of the earlier Resistance period (1941-4) gave way to the fully integrated female combatant. This article seeks to examine the circumstances which lead to such high levels of female representation within the ranks of the partisan army (the Greek Democratic Army), but also to explore the symbolic functions of this volatile imagery in the context of intense struggles to define Greek national culture and identity. /// La participation des femmes au combat fut le trait le plus marquant de la Guerre Civile grecque (1946-1949). Le début de ce conflit marqua une modification dans la division sexuée du travail au moment où la nouveauté du soldat féminin, propre à la période de la résistance (1941-1944) devint un phénomène commun. Cet article tente de comprendre les circonstances qui ont mené à de tels niveaux de féminisation de l'armée des partisans (l'Armée Démocratique grecque), mais aussi d'explorer les fonctions symboliques de l'imagerie qui l'accompagna, dans le contexte des luttes de définitions autour de la culture et de l'identité nationale grecque. /// Die Beteiligung von Frauen an Kampfhandlungen war wohl das aufsehenerregendste Merkmal des griechischen Bürgerkriegs zwischen 1946 und 1949. Der Beginn des zivilen Konflikts markierte eine Verschiebung in der geschlechtspezifischen Aufteilung militärischer Arbeit, und zwar in dem Masse, in dem die 'neuen' weibliche Soldaten der früher Widerstandsphase von 1941 bis 1944 durch die vollkommen integrierte Kämpfein verdrängt wurden. Der Aufsatz untersucht die Umstände, die zu einer solch hohen Beteiligung von Frauen in der Partisanenarmee führten (Griechische Demokratische Armee). Zugleich analysiert er die symbolischen Funktionen dieses flüchtigen Bildes im Kontext intensiver Auseinandersetzungen um die Definition von griechischer Identität und Nationalkultur
