ON THE TERRESTRIAL INVERTEBRATE FAUNA OF WHITE ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND

White Island is a small active volcano off the east coast of the North Island, New Zealand. The active crater is barren but outer lower-slopes and the shore support a restricted flora and fauna of Metrosideros forest, bird colonies, and smaller animals and plants. 162 species of terrestrial invertebrates are listed ; the fauna is found to be derived from the New Zealand mainland fauna. Associations in various localities and habitats are also listed and discussed.Leaf litter and other samples were catalogued in a 'Plant/soil samples' series and invertebrates extracted per cold and top-heated funnels; comparative results are discussed
