Of all the sections ofDe penitentia, the first distinction has attracted the most attention and debate. At first glance, the question (or the two versions of the question) posed seems innocuous enough. A perusal of the scholarly literature on the subject, however, bears witness to the fact that the question has evoked strong disagreement and varying interpretations.
