Saving our sturgeon : protecting Wisconsin's ancient fish

Rebecca Hogue Wojahn (Author)
"Saving Our Sturgeon tells the story of a century's worth of lake sturgeon conservation in Wisconsin. The narrative will focus primarily on three separate efforts that spanned the 20th century and that have had huge impacts on the lake sturgeon population in Lake Winnebago: efforts in the early 1900s to regulate sturgeon harvests, several decades' worth of scientific research into lake sturgeon aging, and the creation of Sturgeon for Tomorrow in the 1970s and 80s, which led to a successful hatching effort. Along the way, readers will be introduced to the fish's natural history (anatomy, behavior, reproduction, habitat) and meet several groups of people who, despite conflicts and differences, came together to save Lake Winnebago's sturgeon population. The book also includes a chapter about the Menominee Nation's efforts since the 1990s to revitalize sturgeon traditions and access to the fish on their reservation, and a chapter on some of the ongoing sturgeon conservation efforts taking place today across Wisconsin (especially those that young people can get involved in)"-- Provided by publisher
