Gardner's photographic sketch book of the Civil War
The story behind this book is the story of two great artist-photographers, Alexander Gardner, a Scot, and Mathew Brady, an Irish American. Brady's name is now part of 20th century culture, as "Lincoln's photographer." Gardner, however, is much less well-known. He was simply the man who took many of the better-known pictures which usually appear under Brady's name. -- introduction
