Tobi Kahn : sacred spaces for the 21st century

"This volume, published to accompany an exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art (MOBIA), New York, discusses the definition of sacred space in the 21st century by focusing on recent artwork by leading contemporary artist Tobi Kahn. Kahn's reputation has grown steadily since his inclusion in the 1985 Guggenheim Museum show New Horizons in American Art, and examples of his work can be found in leading museums and galleries across the United States, including Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Jewish Museum, New York. The central work in the exhibition is Kahn's recent commission for Congregation Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun in Milwaukee, a cohesive artistic ensemble, following in the tradition of other "modern" sacred spaces, such as Matisse's Dominican Chapel of the Rosary at Vence (1951) and Rothko's chapel at Houston (1971)."--Jacket
