This is the tragic-comic story of Nweke Nwakor, a struggling businessman who nearly achieved opulence; his failure, which he ascribes to his illiteracy, sets him reflecting on the adventures of his youth and young manhood, and the attractions - -and disasters -- which deflected him from attending school. It is true that the author comes down clearly on the side of perseverance and self-improvement, but there is no dry moralising in this book
