This essay is a revised and extended version of a lecture given at the University of Sussex in March 1981 as a contribution to a series under the general title Orpheus: Manifestations of Myth. My distinguished colleague Anthony Thorlby spoke in the same series on the subject of Rilke's Orpheus and our lectures, though not designed to be so, in fact proved to be in many ways complementary
