The art of geography : the life and teaching of George Tatham

George Tatham was trained in geography in Britain and the Unitied States in the first third of the twentieth century; in the middle of that century he was part of the first generation of geographers to establish a geography as a university subject in Canada. He wrote two classic articles on the history of geographic thought, but his academic thought was in the classroom. And eloquent and clear-minded lecturer, he preferred to transmit his ideas through teaching. This book presents many of his basic concepts on geography in his own words from his lecture and research notes. Tatham sought to education students broadly through geography. He believed fervently in the enlightening and moral qualities of a liberal university education, and insisted it imposed leadership responsibilities. A man of wide cultural interests, he worked tirelessly to encourage the intellectual and cultural interests of undergraduates. As a humanitarian and an exemplary teacher George Tatham influenced thousands of university students. John Warkentin first knew George Thatham when he was a geography student at the University of Toronto in 1951-56, and then as a colleague at York University from 1963-1987. Back cover
