New Mexico archives : facsimiles of manuscripts at Santa Fe, 1621-1873, (bulk 1621-1846)
The 229 blue volumes (the first 229 volumes of the set) contain photostat copies of the original documents kept by the Spanish and Mexican governments of New Mexico in the library of the Palace of the Governors, in Santa Fe as found there in 1941. In 1941, these documents were copied at the Palace Library by UNM Library and brought to Albuquerque for the convenience of scholars and students on campus. These volumes are at the Center for Southwest Research today. Today the originals of the Spanish and Mexico documents represented in this set are housed at the New Mexico State Records Center and Archives. In the 1970s and 1980s these originals were microfilmed. New material was sometimes added to the later editions. The microfilm editions are also available at the Center for Southwest Research (CSWR.) Researchers sometimes like to compare the 1941 volumes and the later microfilm editions. There are a few differences between them. For example, the photostat documents in these 229 volumes were bound in date order 1621- 1846. They contain a few items not found in the later microfilm sets. Microfilm sets contain a few items not found in photostat documents. A few documents noted by Vigil or Twitchell are missing. The date order arrangement is particularly important for the Mexican era documents (MANM, 1821-1846), as the microfilm edition is arranged by record group or department. Note that this 1941 photstat volume collection covers only the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, Series II, the Administration material (SANM II, 1621-1821) and does not contain the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, Series 1, Land Records of New Mexico, which were at the U.S. Land Office and not the Palace at the time of this 1941 UNM copying project.
