Between 1964 and 1985, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay experienced a period of state-sponsored terrorism commonly referred to as the "Dirty Wars." Thousands of leftists, intellectuals, workers, peasant, labor leaders, and innocent civilians were harassed, arrested, tortured, raped, murdered, or "disappeared."
