The towers of Trebizond
This book is set in the backlands of modern Turkey, a group of highly unusual travel companions makes its way from Istanbul to legendary Trebizond. By reading the book we never know the narrator's gender. The name Laurie can be either male or female, particularly in the English context. The illicit relationship could almost equally be a homosexual relationship. The Towers of Trebizond is strongly autobiographical, it treats with wistful humour and deep sadness the attractions of mystical Christianity, and the irremediable conflict between adulterous love and the demands of the Christian faith
