Devout Catholic Sir Thomas More, Chancellor of England, has an unquestioning faith, and refuses to support King Henry VIII's decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon in order to marry his mistress Anne Boleyn. When the corrupt, petulant king breaks with Rome and the Pope, More resigns his chancellorship in protest. Unsure in his new position as head of the Church of England, and angered by More's continued refusal to acknowledge his suzerainty, the king has More imprisoned in the Tower of London. More, charged with treason and condemned to death for 'maliciously denying the royal Supremacy,' is beheaded, remaing steadfast to his convictions, holding devotion to God and the Church dearer than his loyalty to the King
