An old Virginia correspondence
A series of 11 letters written from 1780 to 1823 between Betsy Ambler (later Elizabeth Jaquelin Ambler Brent Carrington) and her friend Mildred Smith, and then to Betsy's sister Nancy. All but the first are by Carrington. One of the letters (no. 7) is written from Mount Vernon in November 1799, within a month before George Washington's death, and mentions the beginning of Nelly Custis Lewis's first labor
