Betye Saar
"Considered one of America's premier assemblage artists, Betye Saar has been creating inspired pieces since the early 1960s. Saar began her career with printmaking, enameling, and costume design and then expanded to three dimensional assemblages and installations, exploring such subjects as mysticism, heritage, and women's work. Saar transforms orginary objects like keepsakes, old photographs, dried flowers, fabric scraps, and other materials into memory boxes invested with profound emotional power. The artist's imagery, drawn from social and political movements, spiritual systems, and visual cultures, blends black aesthetics, feminist art, and African art with modern and postmodern movements, popular culture, and personal memories."
