Candles in the wind
Mob justice or lynching is becoming a visible trend in India. One such incident that shocked the nation in 2004 was in Kasturba Nagar in Nagpur, ruled by a local goon Akku Yadav. Along with his gang, he killed, raped and repeatedly looted the poor community, while the police never took attention. Mounting public anger forced the police to arrest him and while being taken to court, having lost all faith in the system, hundreds of women and men attacked Akku with chili powder, kitchen knives and such other objects and killed him. The police arrested a few women and men and accused them of murder. This ongoing selective persecution of some people has led to rifts amongst the community and a feeling of betrayal and harassment.
