Chapter 1 Life in Wogeo
Wogeos often describe their island as a canoe. The bow is to the east where the sun rises, and the stern is to the west where the sun sets. The bow is regarded as up and the stern as down. The side of the canoe, where the outrigger should be, is spoken of as the front of the island (baga varo, lit. ‘mainland front’). This is the side facing the mainland, and the smaller island Koil situated in this direction is sometimes spoken of as the outrigger. The back is where nothing else than the open ocean can be seen
