In 1954, after twelve years at Manafon - and a few months before the poetic fruits of those years were to be published for the first time by a London publisher asSong at the Year’s Turning- R. S. Thomas moved to the parish of Eglwys-fach, Cardiganshire, some twelve miles from Aberystwyth, where he became vicar of St Michael’s. By now Thomas was a Welsh speaker and had published a number of essays and reviews in Welsh; he had been looking out for a vacancy in a Welsh-speaking parish, a place where he could come more fully inside the cultural community
