Computer-based medical consultation systems
Medical research and practice has proved to be one of the most successful arenas for expert system applications. Shortliffe's lecture centers around Stanford University's ONCOCIN, a medical expert system designed not only to suggest optimal therapy for cancer patient treatment, but to assist in the data management tasks required to support research treatment protocols. Shortliffe also discusses OPAL, a system which allows expert oncologist to enter directly their knowledge of protocol-directed cancer therapy using graphic-based forms developed in the Interlisp-D environment
