Eastern epic

Shortly after the end of WW2, the author received an invitation from the India Office in Whitehall - the government of India wanted to publish the story of India's efforts during the war ... Much research and travel went into the writing - an intensive tour had been arranged which would take him all over India, to Iraq and Syria and Egypt, the Western Desert and Tunis, Khartoum and Eritrea, Assam, Burma, Malaya, Java, Hong Kong, Japan, the North West Frontier and Nepal. ... The author was obliged to divide his work into two volumes of which this is the first. It is not an official history but was a tribute to " the noble memory of the old Indian Army" and dedicated to the future of what were then the new young armies of India and Pakistan
